Cross country season is almost here, and whether you're gearing up for your first season or coming back with big goals, now's the perfect time to build good habits that will carry you through the fall. At Running Wild, we've worked with runners of all ages and experience levels, and here are a few things we always recommend before the season gets rolling.
Start With the Right Shoes
If there's one thing you don't want to overlook, it's your shoes.
Every runner's feet are different, and wearing a shoe that works for your teammate doesn't necessarily mean it'll work for you. The right pair can make your runs more comfortable and help keep little aches from turning into bigger problems later in the season.
If you're not sure what shoe is best, come by Running Wild. We'll watch you walk, scan your feet, and help you find something that actually fits your foot, not just what's popular.
Don't Try to Do Too Much Too Fast
One of the biggest mistakes we see every year is runners jumping straight into high mileage after taking some time off. Your body needs time to adjust.
Be patient. Build your mileage gradually, listen to your coach, and don't worry if your fitness doesn't come back overnight. The runners who stay healthy all season are usually the ones who take their time early on.
Recovery Isn't Being Lazy
Hard workouts are important, but they only work if your body has a chance to recover.
Make sleep a priority. Drink plenty of water. Eat something with carbs and protein after practice. Stretch, foam roll, or do whatever helps your legs feel fresh.
Recovery is part of training, not something extra.
Get Comfortable Running Off the Road
Cross country courses can be unpredictable. One week you're racing on grass, the next you're climbing hills or weaving through trails.
If all your running is on pavement, try mixing in some dirt paths, trails, or grassy fields whenever you can. It'll help strengthen your legs and prepare you for the kind of footing you'll actually see on race day.
Fuel Your Runs
You can't expect your body to perform well if you're not giving it enough fuel.
Stop by Running Wild to shop hydration products and energy products to fuel your body before, during, and after your runs. Our team at Running Wild is happy to answer any questions that you may have!
Listen to Your Body
Not every ache is something to worry about, but not every pain should be ignored either.
If something feels off for more than a day or two, let your coach or a parent know. Taking care of a small issue early is a whole lot easier than sitting out half the season because you tried to push through it.
Enjoy the Season
At the end of the day, cross country is about more than times and medals.
Some of the best memories come from long runs with teammates, bus rides to meets, cheering each other on, and celebrating everyone's progress.
Work hard, trust the process, and enjoy the ride. The season goes by faster than you think.
