You put in the miles, you followed the plan, and now it all comes down to one simple thing: showing up on race morning with exactly what you need and nothing you don’t!
Start With What’s Already Proven
Race day is usually not the time to try something new. It is important to stick to the things that you know work best for you!
Bring:
Remember, if it hasn’t survived a long run without rubbing, slipping, or bunching up, it doesn’t belong on the start line!
You want to be confident on race day, and it is hard to be confident with things that you have never used before!
Your Bib Setup
Nothing spikes stress like fumbling with your bib five minutes before the start.
Pack and prepare:
- Bib with timing chip
- Bibboards or a running belt are essential to keeping your bib secure while not leaving holes or snags in your favorite running apparel
Put your bib on the night before. It’s one less thing to think about in the morning.
Fuel You Trust
Bring the exact fuel you’ve practiced with:
- Your usual pre-race snack
- Any gels or chews for the race
- A small hydration drink for the wait at the start
Don’t let excitement talk you into trying something new. Your stomach cares about routine, not hype.
Your Watch and Music Setup
If you run with tech, make sure you prepare the night before rather than the morning of.
Make sure:
- Your watch is fully charged
- Your headphones are fully charged
- Your race screen, alerts, and favorite running playlist are already setup
Weather Defense
Always check the forecast before you leave.
Depending on conditions, pack:
- A hat or visor
- Sunglasses
- Sunscreen
- A lightweight rain layer
A few ounces of preparation can make a huge difference in comfort, especially in longer races.
Body Care Basics
These small items save big problems:
- Antichafe balm
- Blister pads
- Hair ties
- Tissues or wipes
Apply antichafe before you leave. Waiting until the start area is usually too late.
A Simple Gear Bag
Use one small bag for everything you’re not racing with:
- Warm clothes
- Phone and keys
- Postrace snack
- A dry shirt and socks
- A recovery drink or snack
Keep it minimal. After you finish, you’ll want your stuff fast!
A Clear Race Strategy
Bring your plan with you.
Know:
- Your goal pace range
- When you’ll fuel
- How you’ll handle the first mile
The first mile is where most races are accidentally ruined. Start controlled. Let everyone else sprint.
